Ask around Metairie and you will get a price for a whole-home generator somewhere between eight thousand dollars and twenty-five thousand. Both numbers are true. The gap between them is almost entirely about sizing, fuel and where the thing has to sit — and none of that gets discussed properly in a sales visit.
This is the honest version, including the part most people actually want to know: whether it will run the air conditioning.
Why This Parish Has So Many
Extended outages here are not a rare event, they are a feature of living on this side of the lake. A storm does not have to be a direct hit to take the grid down for days, and in August a house without power is not merely inconvenient — the heat index makes it genuinely unsafe for anyone elderly or unwell.
That is the real case for a standby generator in Metairie, and it is a stronger one than in most of the country.
Standby or Portable
Portable
A few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. You wheel it out, fill it with petrol, run extension leads. It will hold a fridge, some lights, phone chargers and a fan.
Three real drawbacks. It needs fuel you have to go and buy, at exactly the moment every filling station within thirty miles is dry or closed. Somebody has to be at the house to run it. And carbon monoxide from portable generators kills people in this region every single hurricane season — never in a garage, never in a carport, never under a window, no exceptions.
Standby
Permanently installed outside on a pad, wired into the house through an automatic transfer switch, fuelled by natural gas or propane. The grid drops, it starts on its own within seconds, and it does that whether you are home or in Houston.
That automatic transfer switch is not an optional extra. Without one, back-feeding a house from a generator puts live current onto the utility line and endangers the crews working to restore it. It is also illegal. Any quote that does not include a transfer switch is not a quote for a standby generator.
Sizing: Whole House, or Just What Matters
The word “whole-home” gets used loosely. There are really two products.
- Essential circuits — typically 10kW to 14kW. Fridge, lights, outlets, internet, one air conditioning system. Covers the great majority of what a household actually needs.
- Genuine whole-house — 20kW to 26kW and up. Everything runs as normal, including multiple systems, electric ovens and pool equipment.
Most Metairie homes are well served by the first. The second is worth the money on larger properties with more than one air conditioning system, which is common in the bigger Old Metairie and Metairie Club Gardens houses.
Sizing should come from a load calculation of your actual panel, not from square footage. If someone quotes a kilowatt figure without opening your electrical panel, they have guessed.
Will It Run the Air Conditioning?
The question everybody asks last and should ask first, because in this climate it is the entire point.
An air conditioning compressor draws several times its normal running current for the moment it starts. That inrush is what defeats generators. A unit sized against the running load looks fine on paper and then stalls, dims the lights, or trips out every time the compressor kicks in.
Three things decide whether it works:
- Generator capacity against the starting load, not the running load. Ask specifically which figure was used.
- A soft starter on the condenser. A few hundred dollars of kit that dramatically reduces the inrush and frequently allows a smaller, cheaper generator to carry the air conditioning comfortably. It is the single best value item in this whole subject and it is routinely left out of quotes.
- Whether you have one system or two. Two compressors starting on the same generator need either more capacity or a load-management module that prevents both starting at once.
A soft starter fitted to an existing air conditioner can be the difference between needing a 22kW generator and needing a 14kW one. That is thousands of dollars, decided by a component most people have never heard of.
What It Actually Costs
Installed, in this area, expect roughly:
- 10–14kW essential-circuits system — around $8,000 to $14,000 installed.
- 20–26kW whole-house system — around $14,000 to $22,000 installed, and higher where the electrical work is involved.
- Soft starter on an existing condenser — a few hundred dollars, often the best money in the project.
Roughly half of a typical quote is not the generator. It is the transfer switch, the electrical work, the gas line, the pad, the permit and the labour. That is why two quotes for the same badge on the box can differ by thousands, and why the equipment price alone tells you very little.
These are typical ranges rather than a quotation. Your panel, your gas supply and your site decide the real number.
Fuel: Natural Gas or Propane
Most of Metairie has natural gas at the street, which makes it the obvious choice. It never runs out, there is no tank, and there is nothing to refill during the event.
The caveat worth knowing is that gas supply is not absolutely guaranteed in a severe event, and pressure at the meter has to be adequate for both the generator and everything else in the house. That is a calculation, not an assumption, and it occasionally means an upgraded meter.
Propane is the alternative where gas is not available. It stores indefinitely and it is independent of the utility, but a tank has to go somewhere, it has to be refilled, and in a flood-prone area an unsecured tank is its own problem.
Placement, Permits and Flooding
A standby generator installation needs electrical and mechanical permits. In Metairie that goes through Jefferson Parish because the area is unincorporated; in Kenner it goes through the City of Kenner. Contractors working across the parish line get this wrong regularly, and the delay lands on the homeowner.
Placement has real constraints: clearance from windows, doors and vents so exhaust cannot enter the house, clearance from the gas meter and the electrical service, and manufacturer clearances for airflow around the unit.
And the one specific to here — elevation. A generator installed at grade in a street that has taken water before is a generator that will drown in the event it was bought for. Pad height should be a deliberate decision made against your street’s history, not a default.
The Part Nobody Budgets For
A standby generator sits outdoors, unused, for months at a time, in heat and humidity, and is then asked to start and run continuously for days. That is a demanding duty cycle and it is why maintenance is not optional.
- Annual service — oil, filters, plugs, battery. Budget a few hundred dollars a year.
- The battery is the usual culprit. A dead battery is the single most common reason a standby generator fails to start, and batteries in this climate do not last as long as the label suggests.
- Weekly self-test. Most units run one automatically. If you have never heard yours, find out why.
- Rodents. A warm, dry, sheltered enclosure outdoors is exactly what they are looking for, and chewed wiring is a routine finding.
An unmaintained generator is not a backup plan. It is an expensive object in the garden that fails on the one day it was needed.
When It Is Not Worth It
Worth saying plainly, because nobody selling generators will.
- If you evacuate every time. A generator protects a house you are living in. If you always leave, a battery backup for the fridge and a plan for the freezer costs a fraction of it.
- If you rent. This is a permanent installation and it belongs to the building.
- If the money would be better spent on the roof. Keeping water out of the house beats keeping the lights on inside a house with water coming in.
For a household that stays, has someone vulnerable in it, or cannot go days without cooling in August, the arithmetic is very different and generally favours installing one.
Questions Worth Asking Any Installer
- Was the sizing based on my panel and my air conditioner’s starting load?
- Is a soft starter included, and what does it save me on generator size?
- Is the automatic transfer switch in the price, and what rating?
- Who pulls the permit, and with which office?
- Has the gas meter capacity been checked against the total demand?
- What pad height, and why that height for this street?
- What does the annual service cost, and what does it include?
Bonnabel Air is an air conditioning company, not a generator dealer, so there is nothing being sold here. What we do see, every season, is what happens to the cooling side when the generator was sized without anyone thinking about compressor inrush. If you are getting quotes and want a straight answer about whether it will actually carry your system, the AC repair page has our details — and the storm sequence for the air conditioning itself is in the hurricane preparation guide.
